Ready to Win: National Hunt     Page 1

Often when one watches a race, a particular horse catches the eye, in not winning. The belief is that next time they will win. These pages hope to contain a select list of horses following such a performance.

Newbury, Sat 24 Mar 2001, 3m H'cp Chase. (going: sft).
Kadou Nonantais (Fr) with form figures accumulating more P's than than a packet of mixed vegetables, the prospects did not look bright. The market reflected that at 25/1. The horse led early till past halfway, it was then when the pilot, R Flavin (a very useful claimer!) decided not to be too hard and let the horse come home in its own time. Suprisingly, even though that it gradually dropped back, the impression in the home straight was that the horse was enjoying itself at last. It kept on well to the line without being put under pressure. The contest was strongly run, Plaid Maid (Ire) who was 2nd has already franked the form with a win at Exeter 29 Mar.

Kadou Nonantais (Fr) looks ready to repay the kindness with a win in a decent contest soon.

Haydock H'cp Chase 14 April. Fin 4th: 2nd and staying on when bad mistake 2 out, not recover, kept on after last Unlucky?

Exeter, Thur 29 Mar 2001, 2m 7½f H'cp Chase (going:hvy).
Bosuns Mate, a progressive novice last season, it has hardly inspired this season, however, following a promising run at Kempton at the end of February, this never nearer third was most encouraging. Particularly in the manner in which the horse was galloping on at the finish. Better ground than today's heavy would certainly be an advantage and could see the horse in the winner's enclosure soon.

Bosuns Mate, having slipped down the handicap, it is coming into form nicely

Exeter, Thur 29 Mar 2001, 2m 3½f Hunter Chase (going:hvy).
Despite boasting a pedigree that suggests a decent flat miler, Lead Story (Ire) last season proved to be a promising young staying Hunter. Two runs this season had showed no sign of progress, indeed the opposite with a well beaten run in a Point followed by a weakening pulled up (albeit in desperate ground) in a Hunter Chase at Warwick. On the evidence of last season today's trip may have been on the sharp side for it and this proved the case. Having been well in arrears 5 fences out, it stayed on strongly to finish a much closer fifth, giving the clear impression that another half mile would have suited. With the lack of opportunities at present for Hunters, it was probably more important to get a run now than wait for a trip.

Back at 3 miles and having had some runs, Lead Story (Ire) looks ready to win on good ground.

Exeter Hunter Chase sft April 24 Fin unplaced but not disgraced in a hot race on ground that was too soft.

Market Rasen, Sat 31 Mar 2001, 2m 1½f Nov hdl, (going: gd/sft).
Having raced only three times prior to today, at the age of seven Beehive Lad must have proved a handful to train. Two bumper runs, prominent till weakened both times, last season. Have been followed by a tearaway run at Huntingdon 14 Mar (set up a decent time for the race), leading till weakening 3 out. Today, once again, it led from the start but held on well till two out, helping the winner Fiori to post the fastest time of the day. It is improving and looks ready to win a minor novice on better ground shortly

On a sharp track, on good ground, Beehive Boy can maintain its progress by winning soon
