Ratings for Royal Ascot (day: 3)

Highlight of yesterday's racing obviously was the win of Grandera demonstrating that betting on Group Ones with top jockeys (Dettori gave it a fine confident ride) and pacemakers provide the most consistents results. Low point of the day was the headless chicken ride in the Jersey of Millennium Dragon by taking on Redback. Ironically this one has recently been acquired by the Maktoum family and Dettori was not on it this time, riding for Godolphin instead. The winner, Just James who had put in a fantastic finish (in a fast last 2f split) to win at Newmarket was one of the beneficiaries of the mad early gallop. It may even benefit from a step up to a mile now.

None of the fillies had put in a really good time before the Queen Mary. The top-rated Presto Vento who had had three opportunities to put up a reasonable time was definitely disadvantaged by running out on the outside of the field. There is no way, however, that she would have beaten the impressive winner Romantic Liason, winner of her only previous race, who looked top class here.

Norton ran on well to peg back the gallant Invader in the Royal Hunt Cup. Beauchamp Pilot was possibly unlucky having got rid of its jockey before the start and also by the way the race unfolded (Norton finishing down the middle) which did not suit the tactics employed in the race. K Fallon who had won on it Haydock had a disappointing ride on Island Light.

He made up for that when winning on Riyadh in the Ascot Stakes. Incidentally this was yet another win (his fourth) for the trainer Martin Pipe. Also the Grandera win was the third successive for Godolphin and yesterday M Stoute won his third Queen Anne in a row and A P O'Brien notched up a hat trick of St James's Palace stakes.

The Chesham was falsely run. Pinkerton was outpaced when the tap was turned on two furlongs out. Like his stable companion Tacitus well beaten yesterday, this one would have found the ground too fast. Tomahawk was backed (not by me fortunately) as if defeat was out of the question but just failed to hold back Helm Bank. It was not helped by running on the outside of the field, the winner came up the rail and therefore should not be written off yet.

Todays racing involves a number of cavalry charges yet again and luck in running will be needed as usual. Will be looking at the draws and jocking bookings before deciding to have a bet, am just as likely to back a second, third ot fourth best in some races, it is that tight. The biggest question about the Gold Cup is will a horse stay the 20f. Will be backing Wareed and saving on Vinnie Jones No guarantee that either will get the trip but both are promising young stayers.

The ratings below are weight adjusted. Have made no adjustments for the going or draw. Ratings in brackets are based on last season's performance. Have put the going requirement down if I think the horse will be best with some give. Marino Marini has only raced on heavy ground if it handles the faster ground would be a certainty, if!
