Back to the Grind

A blank day at Aintree yesterday which is not surprising. The Grand National is hard, the 2 mile handicap hurdle is difficult, the 20f Grade 1 hurdle is normally a tactical slowly run affair for two milers running over the wrong trip and the bumper is always slowly run. Have had plenty of success in the two mile handicap chase but they moved that to another day. The betting race then was the Novices' Hunter Chase. Last year's winner Lord Atterbury was my biggest bet of the week for example. That has gone. Anyway wonder I am not interested in going to Aintree for the National these days.

If there was one change they could make for the better, it would be to reduce the 20f Grade 1 to 2m. Let's see the fastest hurdlers actually racing throughout. The Bumper needs a radical re-think. If the racegoer is not to be shortchanged in getting the current race as part of a six race card. I would reduce it to around 12f. A few more of these races could be run throughout the season, particularly at courses such as Towcester when it is testing. A stipulation that I would make for all such races including the juvenile events run now is that participation in such an event excludes the horse from running on the flat until November. Merely to prevent flat horses being trained for easy pickings against late maturing types.

Today's Racing

Have had a number of letters from people who have rejected my suggestion of cancelling Sky because of their interest in Football. I am interested in football and have to say that is was more interesting before Sky turned it into a business. It does highlight the danger of Sky having a monopoly on sports transmisison. A Horseracing channel would need to be shown on Sky as well as cable. Including it as part of a Sports package would be a mistake. A subscription channel would be preferred, though in terms of betting revenue a free to air with no strings regarding packages channel such as offered by Eurosport would be better.

Anyway am not keen to put up ratings for non televised meetings because I do not want to encourage the current situation. Will point out that the following horses at Lingfield are top-rated today, am not going to make a habit of this.

  • 3:10 Barton Nic. Thrown in on Hurdling form. Exaggerated waiting tactics reduced margin of victory last time in coming from virtually last on the final bend, to win.
  • 4:10 Apple Joe (3:40), it unseated its jockey last time because in my opinion James Davies did not see the fence coming and was about to hit the horse when it took off. It jumped to the right slightly, he was not balanced and went flying. It was gambled on then (just before the race) even though the ground was probably too quick. I believe it would not have won in anycase. Will be looking for signs of support today as conditions seem ideal.
  • 4:40 Jaloux d'Estruval. Thrown in on Chase form. Has been failing to get round over fences. Jumped OK at Towcester over hurdles but the combination of testing ground over a very stiff 3m proved too much.
