Weekend Highlights

Thursday, Wincanton Going: good to firm

  • 1:45 Slow race. King Eider is pencilled in with 119.
  • 2:20 Slow race. Alvino, half brother to Frosty Canyon, is pencilled in with 117. Jim Culloty says that its wind problems require it to run on decent ground.
  • 2:55 Hots Shots 122 won this easily but it was a weak race in that Blue Americo 96 probably found the combination of trip and going to sharp. The going would have much too quick for Avitta.
  • 3:30 Zaffamore 119 was produced to win on the flat. Was not flattered by the result as the early gallop was not strong enough.
  • 4:05 Chasing The Bride 99, came into this race nearly at her best and won this easily.
  • 4:40 Storm Prince 105, given a positive ride by Tony McCoy, kept the gallop up all the way to the line. This was the horse's best effort since its juvenile days when registering 107 on soft ground.
  • 5:15 Flying Falcon 105. Another made all winner.

Carlisle Going: soft side of good

  • 2:05 Monet's Garden 37. A slow race, the winner could do no more than win. Have it down for 116+
  • 2:40 Red Rampage 107, put in a fine staying effort making all to win. Lord Capitaine 105, who stayed on well for second is a Sedgefield specialist. Moscow Leader 100, will be winning soon.
  • 3:15 Chabrimal Minster 95, stayed on well to overhaul Fromragstoriches 90. They are in danger of being over-rated but could improve again on this.
  • 3:50 Mister Friday 100+, had this sewn up a long way from home.
  • 4:25 Hugo De Perro 68, lost ground at the start but still had enough in hand to win this moderately run contest. Totally Scottish is worth trying at two miles if it comes back here.
  • 5:00 Young Chevalier 97, not as good an effort as last week. Did not go as fast as at Doncaster which is why it found enough to win when required after the last. Have 111 in mind over 20f.
  • 5:35 Sobraon 61. No pace, the winner did well to score so emphatically. Will have to pencil in 101+

Towcester Going: Chase - soft side of good. Hurdle - Good to soft

  • 1:55 Easy for Eau Pure 46. Had rated at 110 in France over fences therefore mark of 80 was not exactly demanding.
  • 2:30 Tip Top Lord 111 stayed on well to win this. Have 120+ pencilled in providing there is some give. Ah Yeah 88+ Ran a fine race. An ordinary handicap should be a formality providing there is give underfoot.
  • 3:05 Imtihan 74 has won another slow race. Flat rating suggests that 112+ is easily within reach.
  • 3:40 slow race
  • 4:15 Sword Lady 67 lead to out to beat The Bar Maid. Both are better in than this with 104 and 86 pencilled in respectively.
  • 4:50 Lancastrian Jet 90 just got the better of The Granby 92 in an average contest. Both are capable of better.
  • 5:25 The Sawyer 99 stayed on well to beat Lord Olympia 88. Both should continue to improve.

Sandown, Going: easing from soft side of good to good to soft.

  • 2:00 Silk Trader 84 slow race. Hat trick for winner in contest had put up its best performance here a few weeks back behind Grand Finale.
  • 2:30 Mounsey Castle 116, led two out and held on well. Is improving will probably need to go back over 3m to better this on faster ground.
  • 3:05 Mercato 123+. Had said it did not stay three miles so humble pie time again. Did back it against Gunner Welburn last time it ran here and was disappointed. Had reasoned then that 21f on heavy ground at Plumpton would be as testing as 3m on good. The stronger early galloped helped as did the rider Capt R T Sturgis (7), who did a cool Timmy Murphy like impression in holding the horse up as long as possible. Visibily travelling better than the front two at the railway fences he delayed his move until approaching two out. The race was soon over. The front two who did each other no favours were Kings Mistral 112 and Satshoon 106. A season's best for the latter though 21lb below its last recent Sandown win for the former.
  • 3:40 Quick 127 Got involved in a shooting match with another runner at Newbury and was a spent force entering the straight second time around. Ridden with more restraint here, it made all the difference. Midnight Creek 110 looked far from keen.
  • 4:10 Tales of Bounty 84 did not have to be at its best to win this moderately run contest, from Act In Time 75 and Indien Du Boulay 72. All three are capable of better.
  • 4:45 Back To Ben Alder 104. Have 118 penciled in for 20f. Nyrche 102 and It's Just Harry 97 both look capable of further improvement.

Ayr, Going: fast side of good.

  • 2:10 Armagueddon 114, an easy winner will need to jump better.
  • 2:40 The Laird's Entry 81. Won a poor contest. Have 102 pencilled in.
  • 3:15 Just The Jobe 69 had the extra bit of toe to deprive Caesar's Palace in a slow race. The second is not blessed with a great turn of foot but has ability. Would be better off running in more competitive strongly run contests.
  • 3:50 Double You Cubed 88 stayed on to win an eventful race. It ran at the same meeting the next day at 2m. Was never able to get into the contest. Suggesting that 20f is a minimum trip for the horse. Glenfarclas Boy 95 was still travelling well when crashing out at the third last. Will pencil in 99 for the future.
  • 4:20 Bohemian Spirit 83, has apparently not been quite getting home over three miles, so far. It won this 20f contest comfortably. Will pencil in 88 for next time.
  • 4:55 Kid Inheritance 77 just got the better of My Ace in a slow contest. Would fancy the latter to prevail next time under similar conditions. Spectacular is capable of better, have 99 pencilled in.

Leicester, Going: good

  • 2:20 Eastern Point 91 a comfortable win for this improving mare. Can not understand why Trainer chose to ride something else at Folkstone and more to the point how he was allowed. Black Smoke 89 confirmed the goodimpression of its Carlisle run.
  • 2:50 Cape Stormer 116 was much too good for the others.
  • 3:25 Jaffa 83 come from behind to win this contest. Rated 107 in the past it could well be able to do 110 even now.
  • 4:00 Delgany Royal 91, a few pounds behind its season's best of 94 just held on from Star of Raven 90 who is improving. The winner had been rated 130+ in the past. Will pencil in a conservative 109 for now.
  • 4:30 Longstone Boy 96, like the previous two winners a twelve year old. It was always finding enough to hold off Find Me Another 95, who should pick up a similar contest (Maiden) this season. The Vintage Dancer 83 ran a fair race for its owner rider.
  • 5:05 Route One 97 landed a gamble in wining this. Jazz Night 86 ran a fair race. Parte Prima 80 would be better with another four furlongs. Jackie Jarvis 73 is not straightforward . Would prefer a bit further, Fakenham seems to suit.

Sandown, Going: Hurdles deteriorating from soft to heavy. Chase: Soft

  • 1:05 Distant Thunder 114 handled the ground no problem. Time To Shine 109 was given a soft lead though could not hold on. Perfect Liaison 108 kept on well. Lustral Du Seuil did not look happy on the ground.
  • 1:35 Control Man 137, loving the ground, dived away to the left after the last but had enough of a lead to hold on. Eric's Charm 147 not proven on the ground ran a fine race under a big weight. The rest were well beaten.
  • 2:10 Scorned 137 gamely kept on to win this from Bold Bishop 150 and Fenix 129. Would probably be out of the weights if running in the County Hurdle. The runner up put in a rating that suggested it would not have been out of place in this week's Supreme Novices hurdle which has been weakened by a number of defections. Grand Finale was never travelling. The ground is probably the best reason.
  • 2:40 Perfect Master 128 stayed on to win this handicap chase. Lord 'n' Master 110 had the race in the bag but folded after the last. The pound overweight may have made the difference. Taking a leaf out of Capt T Sturgis's book would have certainly made all the difference.
  • 3:10 Marsh Run 92, Kingsbay 88 and Sabreflight 78 won an uninspiring contest.
  • 3:45 Kalca Mome 106
  • 4:20 Reiziger 123 had too much toe for Super Nomad 119. The winner previously 135 over hurdles before injury could be fancied to record 129+ soon. Great Travel 121 lost the race at the start when losing over 15 lengths. Under the circumstances it may have been unlucky.

Ayr, Going: fast side of good.

  • 2:15 Now that Sun Cat 111 has got its act together has to be fancied to oblige again soon. 118 pencilled in. Unicorn Reward 98 was not good enough.
  • 2:50 Strong Resolve 71 had an afternoon stroll for nearly five grand.
  • 3:20 My Line 97 stayed on well to win. May be capable of 110+ but this was a poor race.
  • 3:55 Just In Debt 82 was a fortunate winner. Tyndarius looked unfortunate. THe time was moderate and the race weak with the departure of Black Frost, which hampered Tyndarius. The winner is in the National. Has no chance on this form.
  • 4:30 Maceo 111 always travelling well had the race under control entering the straight.
  • 5:00 Superior Weapon 79 always prominent had too much at the end. Rated 87 two years ago, it looks capable of matching that now. Winter Garden 95 is not the force of old, kept on without ever threatening. It may manage a 100. Polyphon 88 impressed until coming under pressure. Only six, therefore scope for improvement. Wil pencil in 93+.
  • 5:30 Slow race

Newcastle, Going: Chase: softish, Hurdle: Soft

  • 2:00 Slow race
  • 2:30 Edmo Heights 84 won a moderate race. Capitulation of McCraken was surprising.
  • 3:05 Kasthari 125 was an easy winner in decent contest. Roman Ark 102, Abzuson 101 ran with credit. Debutant Harpoon Harry 101+ looks sure to be a race soon. Others to note for the future were Sharp Jack 85+ and Gold Native 84+.
  • 3:35 Belisario 117 was too good for its rivals, may find a few pound's improvement. May "bounce" next time.
  • 4:10 A slow weak race saw Comfortable Call 45 win.
  • 4:45 Winner Lochiedubs needed to do only a 28 to win this. On The Luce needed a much more positive ride than it got here.
  • 5:20 Another farcically slowly run race. (I hate northern bumpers). Big Bone 66 won by default. Am surprised Raven's Last did not go past on the run in. Birdwatch was ridden for most of the straight as if there was another circuit to go. For a horse that was proven to stay in a strongly run race on this ground. The ride given demonstrated a total lack of enterprise, to put it kindly.

Wexford, Going: very soft

  • 2:00 Big Bojangles 91 should not have beaten the second and third, Dolmur and Glenmore Boy respectively.
  • 2:30 Caimin's Caper 110 enjoyed the testing ground.
  • 3:00 Tumbling Dice 101
  • 3:30 slow race
  • 4:00 slow race
  • 4:30 slow race
  • 5:00 and 5:30 slow races
